Can you get into a good university with Low GPA or Backlogs?

Do you have a low GPA (Grade Point Average) or Backlogs in your under graduation? If yes, does it mean that you cannot get admitted to a good university abroad? A big No!

Do you have a way of pursuing yours Masters from a good university abroad? A big YES!

If you know a few things about the way the Colleges & Universities review your application, you would be able to overcome these weaknesses.

Firstly, what is important is not just the number of backlogs but in which year of your under graduation, you have had these backlogs. If you have more backlogs in your first and second years of 4-year graduation, then this would not be considered as a huge negative. So, try to clear you backlogs as early as possible and avoid backlogs in your pre-final and final years.

Secondly, if you have a low GPA, get a WES (https://www.wes.org/) evaluation. What WES does is to convert your Indian GPA into a U.S equivalent. Normally, the conversions improve your GPA when compared to the direct conversion using a mathematical formula.

Thirdly, do ensure that you are submitting a well-rounded Statement of Purpose (SOP). Colleges give more weightage to your SOP than to your GPA alone. Hence, work on your SOP to include your motivation, your goal and what you have been doing to achieve that goal.

Thus, if you are able to work on these factors, a low GPA need not be a reason for you to compromise on your higher education aspirations!

All the Best!
