How do I answer Australia's Genuine Student (GS) questions?

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement asks whether studying in Australia is your main reason for applying for a student visa. You answer it through four short questions in your application, but the officer judges your whole file: your background, your course, your finances and your history. A well-written answer cannot rescue a course that doesn't fit or money you can't explain.

This is Part 2. Part 1 explains why Australia is checking Indian applications more closely.

What is the Genuine Student requirement for an Australian student visa?

It applies to student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024 and replaced the earlier Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. You must show that you understand studying in Australia is the primary reason for your student visa. (Home Affairs: Genuine Student requirement)

GTE focused on whether you intended to stay only temporarily. GS asks a different question: is study genuinely your main purpose?

Can I say I want to work or get PR in Australia later?

Yes. Home Affairs says the GS requirement recognises that genuine students may develop skills Australia needs and may later choose to apply for permanent residence, and that such future intentions do not count against you. (Home Affairs: Genuine Student requirement)

What matters is that, today, study is your main reason for the visa.

What does the visa officer look at under GS?

Many people call this the "GS essay". That name is misleading, because GS is not a writing test. Officers consider:

  • Your circumstances in India (or your country of residence), including ties to family, community, work and your economic situation
  • Your potential circumstances in Australia
  • The value of the course to your future, including whether it is consistent with your current education and helps your job prospects
  • Your immigration history, including any earlier visa refusals
  • Any other relevant information

The application asks you four questions: about your current circumstances, why you chose this course with this provider in Australia, how the course will benefit you, and anything else relevant. (Home Affairs: Genuine Student requirement)

In our experience, officers also check whether everything is consistent across your application, résumé, academic records and employment documents.

Does a gap year affect the GS assessment?

It can, if it's unexplained. Say you graduated two years ago and did nothing in between, and now you're applying for a master's. An officer may conclude you are turning to study because other options didn't work out, not because you want this qualification. That is not the impression you want to give.

If you have a gap, explain it with evidence: work, exam preparation, a family responsibility, a course or a project.

How much money do I need to show for an Australian student visa?

At least enough to cover travel, tuition and 12 months of living costs, which is AUD 29,710 for a student. (Federal Register of Legislation: LIN 24/042) Alternatively, you can show a parent's or spouse's annual income, as set out in the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool. (Home Affairs: Document Checklist Tool)

Having the amount in a bank account is not the whole answer. In the applications we see, officers look at:

  • Where the money came from
  • How long it has been in the account
  • Whether it is genuinely available for your education
  • Whether your sponsor's income supports the amount shown
  • Whether your family can fund your studies without relying on your part-time earnings

Take a common situation. A family usually keeps about ₹3 lakh in the account. Just before the visa application, ₹35 lakh arrives. That will be looked at closely. It doesn't mean the visa will be refused: the money may be from a property sale, a matured investment, an education loan or another genuine source. But the source must be documented and submitted with your application.

Plan your funds around savings, income and loans you can prove. Don't count on what you hope to earn part-time in Australia.

What happens if I submit fake documents for an Australian visa?

The damage goes far beyond one application. Examples include altered bank statements, fake deposits, fabricated employment letters, modified academic records, and wrong answers about earlier visa refusals.

Home Affairs warns that bogus documents or false and misleading information may lead to refusal of your application, cancellation of your visa, restrictions on future applications and possible legal action. (Home Affairs: Providing accurate information) In general, it can mean being barred from most visas for three years, or ten years where identity is not established.

"My agent prepared it" will not protect you. The application is in your name, so read and check every answer and every document before it is submitted.

How can Indian students make a stronger Australian visa application?

Australia continues to have a very large Indian student population, and it still offers strong universities, industry-linked courses and post-study opportunities. What has changed is the level of checking. Picking any available course, arranging funds at the last minute and submitting a generic explanation no longer works.

Before you apply, run this five-point check:

  1. Does the course connect logically with your education, work or future career?
  2. Can you explain why this university and course are worth the cost?
  3. Can you document every major deposit and source of funds?
  4. Is your information consistent across your application, résumé, academic records, employment documents and earlier visa applications?
  5. Have you personally read and checked everything your counsellor or agent submitted?

If any answer is no, a more impressive GS answer is not the fix. The application itself needs strengthening.

What is the 4C test for a GS application?

A simple way to remember all of this:

  • Course: does the course make sense for you?
  • Career: does it lead to a logical career outcome?
  • Cash-flow credibility: can you explain and document where the money came from?
  • Consistency: do all your documents and answers tell the same story?

If these four are strong, your application tells a much more credible story. Don't try to create the perfect visa story; make sure your real story makes sense. A strong offer gets you into the university. A credible application makes your case for the visa.

Frequently asked questions

When did GS replace GTE for Australian student visas?

For applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024.

Can I mention that I want permanent residence in Australia in my GS answers?

Yes. Home Affairs says future intentions to apply for PR do not count against you, as long as study is your main reason for the visa now.

What questions are asked in the GS requirement?

Four: your current circumstances, why this course with this provider in Australia, how it will benefit you, and any other relevant information.

How much bank balance is needed for an Australian student visa?

Enough for travel, tuition and AUD 29,710 in living costs for 12 months, or evidence of a parent's or spouse's annual income. Officers also check where the money came from.

Can I change my field of study for a master's in Australia?

Yes, but explain the link between your earlier education, work, the new course and your career goals.
