Is Australia rejecting 75% of Indian student visas?

No. Australia is not rejecting 75% of Indian student visa applications, and that headline is misleading. But Australia is examining Indian applications much more closely, and fewer visas are being granted. A strong admission offer is no longer enough: your course choice, your funds and every document must tell one consistent story.

Is it true that Australian student visa grants to Indians fell by 75%?

Not as a general statement. A headline that went viral said grants to Indian students had fallen by 75%. Even if a fall like that showed up in one month or one sector, it would not mean Australia refuses 75 of every 100 Indian applicants. A fall in the number of grants is not a rejection rate.

The latest half-yearly report from the Department of Home Affairs shows 23,665 student visas granted to Indian citizens in July–December 2025, down 5.6% on the same period a year earlier. (Home Affairs: Student and Temporary Graduate visa program report, December 2025)

So the situation is serious, but it is not a 75% rejection rate.

Why is Australia checking Indian student visas more closely?

Australia has been tightening its international student system for several years. In our experience counselling students, the applications that run into trouble usually show one of three problems:

  • Study looks secondary. The visa appears to be used mainly as a route to work.
  • The course doesn't fit. The course has little connection to the student's earlier education or work.
  • The evidence is weak or false. Financial, academic or employment documents are thin, inconsistent or fabricated.

The message is not "Australia doesn't want Indian students". It is "Australia wants stronger, more credible applications".

What documents does Australia check for Indian students?

Use the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool, which tailors the list to your passport country and your university. For financial capacity, it asks for evidence of funds for travel, 12 months of living costs and tuition fees (plus costs for any family members coming with you), or evidence of a parent's or spouse's annual income. It also asks for English test results unless you are exempt. (Home Affairs: Document Checklist Tool)

The 12-month living-cost amount for a student is AUD 29,710, in force since 10 May 2024. (Federal Register of Legislation: LIN 24/042)

In practice, officers look closely at:

  • Bank balances
  • Education loans
  • Your sponsors' income
  • Employment records
  • Where the money actually came from

Make sure your application is complete and consistent, and gives the officer confidence in both your seriousness as a student and your family's ability to fund your studies.

Why does Australia ask where my money came from?

Because having money in an account is not the same as showing it is genuinely yours to use. Some countries look mainly at whether the funds are available. Australia, like Ireland, also looks at where large amounts came from. Ireland, for example, asks for any large or irregular deposit to be fully explained. (Irish Immigration Service: Student finances)

This is where many Indian families struggle. A family may have savings but low or no declared income in their income tax returns. When the income on record cannot explain the funds shown, the application is at serious risk. If your parents are sponsoring you, their ITRs, salary records and the paper trail for any large deposit matter as much as the balance itself.

Does an admission offer mean I will get the Australian visa?

No. The university and the visa officer make two separate decisions.

The university asks: does this student meet the academic and English requirements for the course?

The visa officer asks a wider question: does the whole study plan make sense?

For example, a Computer Science graduate applying for a master's in Data Science is easy to understand. An engineering graduate applying for an unrelated course, with no clear explanation, may still get an offer, but the officer may ask:

  • Why Australia?
  • Why this course?
  • How will it help your career?
  • Is study really your main purpose?

Changing fields is allowed. But you must show a credible link between your earlier education, your work experience, your proposed course and your future career. That wider check happens through the Genuine Student requirement, which we cover in Part 2: how to answer the Genuine Student questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Australia rejecting 75% of Indian student visas?

No. The official Home Affairs report for July–December 2025 shows grants to Indian citizens down 5.6% on a year earlier. Scrutiny has increased, but a 75% rejection rate is not what the data shows.

How much money do I need to show for an Australian student visa?

AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, plus travel and tuition fees, or evidence of a parent's or spouse's annual income. Use the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool for your exact list.

Can my parents sponsor my Australian student visa?

Yes. Their funds or income can be used, but officers will look at where the money came from, so keep their ITRs, salary records and explanations for large deposits ready.

Does a university offer guarantee an Australian student visa?

No. Admission and the visa are separate decisions. The visa officer looks at whether your whole study plan makes sense.
